Place the phone flat near the centre of the surface, with the screen facing up.

How do you level a surface in both directions?

Place the phone flat near the centre of the surface. Tap Check Surface, then wait a second for the reading to settle.

The bubble moves toward the higher corner. Lower that corner, or raise the corner opposite it.

Work on one direction at a time. Move the bubble onto the centre line first, then move it along that line into the middle ring.

Adjusting all four feet in turn takes much longer, because every change moves both directions at once.

What do the three numbers mean?

Total lean is the large number. It shows how far the surface is from level, in whichever direction it falls.

It has no plus or minus sign, because a slope has no direction until you choose a side to stand on. A reading of 3° across and 4° along gives a total of 5°, not 7°.

Across and Along show the two directions you can adjust with feet or shims. Drop per metre converts the total into millimetres.

For a stand with three legs, line up one edge of the phone with two of the legs. Level the surface using those two, then finish with the third leg on its own.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bullseye level used for?

Anything that must be level in every direction rather than along one edge. Common examples are tripods, caravans, machine bases, telescope mounts, turntables and appliances with four adjustable feet.

Why does the bubble move toward the higher side?

A real bullseye vial has a domed glass top. The liquid runs downhill and pushes the bubble to the highest point of the dome.

Is it accurate enough for a camera tripod?

Yes, for photography and video. For surveying or astrophotography, use the levelling hardware built into the mount. A phone, a case and a plate add too many soft joints at that level of accuracy.

How do I level a table with four feet?

Set one direction using a single pair of feet, then leave that pair alone and adjust the other pair. Turning all four in sequence moves the bubble in circles.

Can I use it in landscape?

Yes. X and Y follow the screen, so Across always means across the screen as you hold it.

How is this different from the spirit level page?

The information is the same, but it is drawn differently. The spirit level uses two straight vials, which are easier to read against a specific edge. A round vial is easier to read while you adjust the feet.
